go to TopThe use of pesticides containing hazardous substances is a major concern for public health. The European Commission proposed revising the legislation for approving substances used as pesticides. This aimed primarily to reduce risks to public health from dangerous pesticides by setting clear exclusion criteria for certain hazardous chemical substances (such as those that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction). The European Parliament voted on the legislation in October 2007. The Greens wanted to strengthen the proposal to ensure that hazardous substances could only be approved for use in pesticides if the pesticide is used in 'closed systems' or other conditions excluding contact with humans and where residues of the substance concerned on food/feed are restricted to minute amounts. This amendment was approved but a large number of MEPs voted against.
