Boosting renewables in the EU
Signifi cantly increasing the share of renewables is necessary
for the EU to meet its climate targets and member
states agreed to a binding EU renewables target of
20% by 2020 - although the EP had called for a 25%
target. A sectoral approach to renewables (with individual
targets for electricity, and heating and cooling) is
crucial to ensuring the overall target can be met. While
the report adopted by the ITRE committee does call for
sectoral targets for heating and cooling, it fails to do so
for electricity and the Greens will seek to remedy this.
